A new wildflower glade for Boughton Monchelsea!

On a slightly damp Tuesday a collection of children from Class 1 at Boughton Monchelsea Primary school, led by their teacher Mrs Roots, made a jolly procession along Church Street on their way to sow wildflowers. They turned down Haste Hill Road and into Campfield Farm passing by the scout hut. They joyfully entered orchards and encountered lots of muddy puddles. Soon questions came about the trees in the orchard, why were they there and how did they grow?
As we approached Firmin’s Field where lots of young trees have been planted more questions came. Some of them knew the answers and soon we were hearing all about bees and pollen and honey from the children. A circle of land had been prepared by volunteers in the middle of this new young wood, complete with rustic bench hewn from a large log. They learnt a little bit about the history of the field, dedicated to the memory of Ian Firmin, and the plans by Boughton Monchelsea Amenity Trust (BMAT) to return the land to nature and to ensure residents can enjoy it forever.
The children loved sowing the seed and kept coming back for more. Although the scattering was a little haphazard the end result after a bit of foot stomping was perfect. The children are all keen to return in the summer to see the flowers blooming and to count the insects enjoying the wildflowers.
